2024 Hawai’i Bowl Game Notes
Overall Notes
- The Mountain West is 4-7 all-time in the Hawai‘i Bowl.
- The American Athletic Conference is 1-2 all-time in the Hawai‘i Bowl.
- The Hawai‘i Bowl went to overtime for the third time in its history and first time since 2005.
- Going five overtimes, the 2024 Hawai‘i Bowl is the longest in FBS Bowl history as well as the longest game in Hawai‘i Bowl history.
- The 217 combined rushing yards between the teams (San Jose State 161, South Florida 56) marks the fifth lowest in Hawai‘i Bowl history.
- This was the second-closest game in the history of the Hawai‘i Bowl, with the two-point margin of victory matching the 2022 game (Middle Tennessee 25, San Diego State 23). The Nevada 49-48 win over UCF in 2005 is the closest.
- By time, the 2024 game is the second-longest in Hawai‘i Bowl history at four hours, 18 minutes (4:18). The longest was the 2003 game between Houston and Hawai‘i (won by Hawai‘i 54-48 in three overtimes) played in 4:23.
- Hugh Yoshida Most Valuable Player is kicker John Cannon who connected on three field goals including kicks to send the game to overtime and keep the game tied in the second overtime.
- Ta’Ron Keith’s 93-yard kickoff return in the second quarter was the first in the Hawai‘i Bowl since 2015 (Rashaad Penny, San Diego State) and the third-longest in the history of the bowl.
- Keith’s kickoff return is also the first non-offensive touchdown in the bowl since 2017 (Jaron Bryant, Fresno State, INT return).
- It’s also the first kickoff return for a TD by South Florida since Sept. 3, 2022 vs. BYU. Sean Atkins set a program record for career receiving yards with 2,167 yards topping the previous record of 2,136.
- Atkins finished the game with 11 receptions for 104 yards.
- Quarterback Bryce Archie connected on his first 12 passes of the game, finishing 24-of-35 for 235 yards.
- Linebacker Jhalyn Shuler led the team with 12 tackles, tied for the fourth most in Hawai‘i Bowl history.
- Eget set a Hawai‘i Bowl record with his 58 pass attempts while tying the record with his 33 completions.
- Matthew Coleman finished with 12 receptions for 119 yards and a TD. His 12 catches are
- the fourth-most in the history of the bowl.
- Linebacker Noah McNeal-Franklin recorded a sack and an interception to set up a touchdown in the third quarter.
